Shin Splints

Shin splints occur as a result of inflammation along the periosteum (outer lining of the bone) and tendons that is
characterized by pain along the front of the lower leg.  It is due to repetitive stress associated with repetitive running.
Runners experience diffuse pain along the inner side if the shin starting 2 to 3 inches below the knee and radiates to the
ankle. Pain is most severe at the start of a run.

     The causes are:

     1.        Repetitive running on hard surfaces such as concrete
     2.        Overpronation and foot imbalances
     3.        Improper or worn out running shoes
     4.        Tired or inflexible calf muscles
     5.        Beginner runners or running following a long layoff

Initial treatment involves ice massage, rest and anti-inflammatory medication.  Further treatment may include orthotics,
lower leg stretching and strengthening, better running shoes, nonweight-bearing activities such as cycling and deep water
running, and modification of running surface and mileage.
